Nederburg, Paarl Valley, Western Cape – Landscape Masterplan, New Deli Garden & External Works
The Nederburg wine estate dates back to 1791. The project includes the refinement of the Landscape Masterplan relating to the Manor House and proposed new Deli Garden area.
Nederburg, owned by Distell (a Heineken acquisition), provided the design brief to reimagine the visitor’s experience after the proposed demolition of the roofed wine auction venue.
The scheme includes the alteration of an existing outbuilding into a Food Deli and attractive outdoor seating area incorporating shade, water elements, interesting planting and artwork with new appropriate landscape surfaces and finishes.
The integration of these facilities with the Manor Restaurant, lawn areas & associated interconnected spaces also required a refinement to the existing Landscape Masterplan to ensure spatial integration, new pedestrian circulation patterns, outdoor recreation areas, planting and irrigation upgrades.
Working with an architect and interior designer responsible for the Deli building alterations, OvP explored various options within the fairly limited budget, finally settling on a layout which provided conceptual design clarity. This was achieved by re-defining the edge conditions, maintaining the openness and view lines of the existing manor House lawns and re-definition of a sequence of flexible outdoor garden spaces forming the Deli garden to be located between the Manor House and the relatively new indoor function venue.
The Deli garden, framed by the arrival garden terrace and the existing building was envisaged as a space defined by Water Oaks and flanked by a shallow water feature, providing shade and cooling during the sweltering summer months. The spatial reference being a contemporary cost effective interpretation of the typical French parterre – flexible fine gravel seating areas, lined with trees water & planting beds.
OvP developed the scheme to Sketch Plan Stage for further design development, implementation and supervision by the Architect during the latter half of 2023.
